A string of good results including winning three out of four recent matches has put Lydd Town FC firmly in contention for promotion from division one of the Southern Counties East League.
Their latest home game against Rochester United saw striker Luke Burdon score a double in a 2-1 victory that take the ‘Lydders’ into third place in the league table, two points above Rochester and just a point behind second-placed Larkfield and New Hythe.
In a tightly contested match, Rochester dominated the first twenty minutes before Burdon latched onto a long ball from Lydd keeper Connor Collins and volleyed past the Rochester keeper.
As the game progressed, chances came at either end but the defenses of both teams held out well, until the deadly Burdon picked up a poor back-pass just a few minutes from the end and lifted his shot over the keeper for the second.
The win puts the ‘Lydders’ right back in the thick of the play-off places for promotion to the premier division and was the perfect present for manager Mickey Doyle who celebrated his birthday over the weekend. He said: “We didn’t enjoy a great 20 minutes at the start but managed to ride out the storm and started to take the game to them. It was a great result for us and keeps us in the mix for promotion.”
