Casuals lose in thriller

Icklesham Casuals 2nd team played their first home game for four months last Saturday April 2 against Magham Down in what proved to be a see-saw affair.

The Casuals started brightly and raced into a two goal lead thanks to sparkling wing play from Dan Russell leading to neat finishes from Paul Daniels and Joel Sadler. Plenty of chances followed which suggested a home win, but a strong and pacey Magham Down fought back and won a highly dubious penalty. The Casuals then looked a bit too casual and, not helped by midfield injuries, conceded two more goals before half time.

After a tough team talk at the interval Icklesham started the second half back on top and missed several good chances. Then a 50 yard free kick from Jon Fitton found the bottom corner for what the home side thought was the equaliser, only for the goal to somewhat surprisingly be disallowed for offside after a lengthy discussion between the referee and Magham Down linesman. Instead of being level the Casuals were soon three behind as legs tired and a late goal by supersub Joe Fraser wasn’t enough.

This was an entertaining performance as usual from a spirited second team.

The match ended Icklesham Casuals II 3 v Magham Down 5
