Having lost top spot to Bexhill United Reserves in mid-week the 1st team of Icklesham Casuals returned to the head of division two with a hard fought 3-1 victory over Wittersham on Saturday March 24 in their first league match since mid-December.
The match was switched to Tilekiln Recreation Ground with Icklesham Rec still being unfit for play and it was Wittersham who started the game well and took the lead with their first chance and held this lead until half time.
With Wittersham sitting back on their lead and a much improved performance in the second half, the Casuals pressed for an equaliser and this came just before the hour when Charlie Cornford was brought down in the area and netted the penalty himself. Icklesham went ahead shortly after in similar circumstances when Cornford again converted from the spot after he was brought down. Cornford went on to complete his hat-trick to make the points safe with Wittersham battling very hard all match.
The 2nd team recorded a second successive 4-1 victory when they defeated Herstmonceux II thanks to first-half goals from Michael Beaumont, Adam Knight and Ken Wadbrook with Wadbrook netting again after the interval.
This Saturday the 1st team will make a further attempt to play their much-postponed Hastings Junior Cup quarter final against St Leonards Social II while the 2nd team are without a match.
The final of the Wisdens Sports Challenge Cup which sees Icklesham Casuals take on Sovereign Saints will take place at the Pilot Field on Monday, April 9 with a 7:30p.m. kick-off. Any support for the side will be most welcome.
