1st XI

Rye 1st XI played table-topping Seaford 1st XI on Saturday June 8 in Division 3 East of the 1st Sussex County Cricket League. The game was played in extremely windy conditions, but this failed to deter Rye who faced bowling into the teeth of a howling wind after losing the toss.

Rye bowled tightly, and fielded well, as early wickets fell to Altaf Ahmad 1-14 and Harry Smeed 1-38. Seaford built a partnership between Ollie Smith 38 and Ben Brown 61. Tobias Farrow broke the partnership at 65-3. Brown held the innings together as Rye chipped away at the Seaford batting line up.

Seaford were finally dismissed for 183 as Martin Blincow took 3-21 and Ben Clifton took 2-23. Dan Seabrook behind the stumps took 5 dismissals, with an excellent display with the gloves.

Rye then made a positive start as Rye Concepts MoM James Hamilton (56) shared a 52 run partnership with Harry Smeed who finally fell to a stunning catch at 3rd man. Rye continued to 101-2 off 22 overs. Victory seemed a formality. However the drinks break, and the introduction of spin, saw the wheels come off the rails, as Chris Stanyard took 4-23 and Maxwell Wright took 3-12. Rye failed to bat for the singles, seeking to win in boundaries, and becoming becalmed. Rye were dismissed for 140.

Disappointing for Rye who had controlled 80% of the game, but ending with defeat.

2nd XI

The 2nd XI were rained off in their fixture at home to Firle 1st XI in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn.

3rd XI

Rye third team hosted Pevensey third team for their latest league fixture on a blustery afternoon and on losing the toss were asked to bat first.

Rye got off to a steady start with an opening stand of 37 before Scott Haiselden (10) fell to the bowling of Will Swingler. A mini collapse reduced Rye to 47-4 as Cameron Hoadley claimed figures of 2-17 from 5 overs.

Callum Hadaway joined opener Rowan Sharkey in a partnership that steadied the innings before the latter was bowled having scored 34. A sixth wicket partnership of 56 continued to increase the Rye score as Hadaway looked to find the boundary before being bowled for 40 by Josh Dowsett (1-29). Mike Stoneham continued to push the score along and was joined by Spencer Sharkey who scored a quickfire 23 not out, Stoneham was caught off the last ball of the Rye innings having scored 23 and seeing Rye to 179-8, as Will Swingler finished with figures of 4-37 from 7 overs. The other Pevensey wicket taker was Fred Wallis (1-39).

After tea Pevensey got off to a good start and were assisted when Guy Moore was dropped in the first over. The drop looked to be costly as at the half way stage Pevensey were 79 without loss, however the drinks break bought a wicket the next over as Jack Chapman (19) was bowled by George Jempson (1-16).

A run out in the 25th over left Pevensey on 94-2 and Pevensey still in control. Three wickets in three consecutive overs then looked to turn the game with David Jempson claiming figures of 2-13 from 4 overs, which included Stephen Hoadley (10) and opener Moore (86) leaving the visitors on 126-5 with nine overs left.

The return of Spencer and Rowan Sharkey into the attack put the pressure on the batsmen with the first ball from Sharkey dismissing captain James Wallis for 17. Nick Chapman looked to chase the target scoring a quick 13 before Spencer Sharkey bowled him in the penultimate over, which only included one run, as he claimed figures of 1-26 from 6 overs. Pevensey required 7 runs from the final over for victory and 2 from the final ball as Rowan Sharkey bowled the batsmen to finish with figures of 2-32 from 8 and sealing victory for Rye by one run. John Josiah (1-18) was the other Rye wicket taker.

Only one Junior game survived this week’s weather as an excellent team performance by the Under 13s defeated Egerton. With only 2 Under 13s they bowled straight, conceding only 6 wides, and all outfield players bowled. Henry Scambler-Rogers only conceded 5 byes, as Egerton scored 112-7. In reply Rye went past the target with 7 wickets in hand and 9 balls to spare. Thanks to a 90 run partnership between captain Sam Channon and Under 11 Tom O’Neill.

This Saturday, June 15, the 1st XI host Eastbourne 2nd XI in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera. The 2nd XI travel to play Glynde 2s and the 3rd XI travel to play Westfield 2s. On Monday the Under 11s travel to play Ashford Town and on Thursday the Under 13s host Great Chart.
