Rye 1st Xl made the trip to Brighton to play St Peters last Saturday, enjoying the first cricketing day of summer. Rye lost the toss, were invited to bat first and were quick out of the traps as skipper Harry Smeed hit 21 off 11 balls.

Rye’s innings was built around a brilliant knock of 144 not out off 137 balls by Dan Stickells and at 113-5 he was joined by Tobias Farrow (71 not out) who together compiled a 149 run partnership that took Rye to 284-5 off 45 overs. Thirty fours and eight sixes saw the bowling plundered to all parts of Preston Park.

St Peters then equally took up the cudgel as they rocketed along at more than a run a ball and at 237-4 the advantage lay with St Peters. Then Rye fought back in a thrilling conclusion which was being live streamed on YouTube, as exciting as any IPL conclusion.

Tobias Farrow with 4-53 and Harry Smeed (3-31) oversaw the collapse as St Peters ended up with 260 all out in 40 overs.

This Saturday Rye 1sts host Glynde 1sts as the top two teams in Division 3 East shoot out for the one promotion place available to Division 2. The match is sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera.

Seconds seek best form

The 2nds continue to seek their best form. They allowed St Peters 2nds to get away to 151-6, with a lack of controlled bowling. Bryan Hilton (51) and Danny Andrews (38) fully maximising the opportunity. The introduction of Ben Clifton for 8 overs (1-40) and Martin Blincow for 8 overs (4-19) and a run out, reduced St Peters to 167-7. However, a dropped catch allowed George Prudden to hit 34 not out and take St Peters to 209-7.

In reply Rye came out positively and raced to 35 in 4 overs. Then lapses and St Peters accepting chances, saw Rye’s innings fall away to 120 all out, with no batsmen breaching 20 runs. For St Peters, Brendan Guest (4-14) starred with the ball.

This Saturday the 2nds travel to Glynde 2s, as both teams occupy the bottom 2 places in Division 6 East.

Sidley bowl over Thirds

Rye 3rd XI 94, Sidley 2nd XI 173-4: Rye third team hosted Sidley seconds for their latest league fixture and on losing the toss were asked to field first.

The Rye opening bowlers bowled well to restrict the scoring to 22 from the first fourteen overs without taking a wicket. Sam Channon (1-18 from 6 overs) claimed the first wicket before James Archer (1-18 from 5 overs) dismissed Nigel Cole (12) with the score 37-2 from 20 overs.

Harry Little then came to the crease and looked to hit the ball to the boundary, and dropped catches frustrated Rye, as Little went on to score 82 before being caught off the bowling of John Josiah (1-37 from 7 overs) as Sidley finished their innings with a score of 173-4.

Rye also made a slow start to their innings with Trevor Stanly (1-10 off 8 overs) making the initial breakthrough. Alex Stone (14) and Joseph Kemsley (12) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures as others came to the crease looking to increase the run rate.

Mark Gransden (3-22 off 8 overs), Trevor Ramsden (2-12 from 8 overs) and Jahangir Rahman (2-20 from 5 overs) were the pick of the Sidley bowlers as Rye were dismissed for 94. The other Sidley wicket takers were Paul Oxborrow (1-4 from 2 overs) and Ryan Polton (1-7 from 3.1 overs).

On Monday the under 11 A team travel to Tenterden and the Rye under 11 B team travel to play Ashford Town C. On Tuesday hard ball coaching continues 6-8pm. Then on Friday softball coaching continues with All Stars at 6pm and Cricket Dynamos at 7pm.

Rye has secured an ECB Grant to run a summer cricket camp during the club’s cricket week August 4-6. Details to be published shortly on how to get involved.
