It was a tough day last Saturday, only cheered up by the 3rd XI result and the performance of Euan Fricker scoring 159, as Rye 3rds amassed 282-5 off 40 overs. Euan was making a return to playing for Rye, and along with George Chanon, 28 not out, established a challenging target, which saw Willingdon 3rds dismissed for 164. Alex Stone and Reece Martin with 3 wickets apiece were supported by David Jempson and Colin O’Neill with 2 wickets apiece. This Saturday the 3rds travel to Ninfield to play Herstmonceux 3rds.
The 1st team suffered at the blade of Matthew Cramp who blitzed 145, including 16 x 4s and 9 x 6s. Along with opening partner Alex Thornhill 47, they scored at 12 an over to put the game beyond Rye. But once out, the rest of the batting was dismissed within 43 overs. Martin Blincow 3-66 and Jackson Woodcock 3-36 did the damage. Rye chased the game and rattled along at 10 an over, Carl Mumba 58, Luke Payton 50, but Rye lost wickets too quickly and finished on 225 all out in the 34th over. This Saturday Rye 1sts host Bexhill 1sts at the Rye Cricket Salts in a match sponsored by My Sweet Etcetera.
The 2nds found themselves in a low scoring thriller against Iden 1sts. Rye batting first were all out for 107. Mark Cook, 32, and Spencer Fielding, 20, led the way with the bat as Peter Harris 4-27 and Julian Hanshaw 2-23 did the damage with the ball. In reply, Iden found it no less easy as Sam Channon 3-15 amd Kyle Scott 2-26 threatened an unlikely victory. This Saturday the 2nds travel to second placed Polegate.
Last week, the junior season extended itself into August. The Under 11s reached the finals day of the Under 11 Cup, but lost by just 4 runs to Folkestone in a gripping match. Then last Sunday, the Cricket Dynamo section took two teams to play Westfield. A really enjoyable morning saw Westfield win 2 matches and Rye likewise.
The Under 11s now look forward to the Sussex junior cricket festival, with home games against Linden Park and Fletching and trips to Seaford and St Peters in Brighton.
