Juniors in the runs

The past week has seen an avalanche of runs in Junior Cricket Matches. Last Thursday, the Under 13s travelled to Tenterden in what turned out to be an exciting match. Tenterden batted first and put together 193-5 off 20 overs. A short boundary and a lightning fast outfield and big hitting. Undaunted, Rye matched them shot for shot, despite being younger and smaller in stature. Freddie Furnival and Josh Markson-Brown both scored 30 and retired, then Bertie Furnival, Ollie Balcomb, Oscar Wincott-Stone and Nathan Paine hit 20s as Rye just fell short in a thrilling run chase.

On Monday the Under 11A team lost at home to Folkestone A, against a much changed team they beat earlier in the season. The Folkestone boys hit 164-4 as Rye responded with 104-6. The result is not everything. Only 4 wides were bowled by Rye, a sign of real development. Next week the A team travel to play Tenterden, and the B Team have a practice match at home.

On Tuesday the Under 15s hosted Mersham, top of the league and a victory away from taking the League as champions. Mersham batted first and posted 170-3 off 20 overs. James Archer, 2-22, the pick of the Rye bowlers. Rye opened with skipper Joseph Kemsley and Tom O’Neill, who shared an unbroken 100 run partnership before both had to retire. Then Harry Putland, 34 n.o. and Sam Channon, 18 n.o. saw Rye home to victory by 10 wickets, with 3 balls to spare. Next week the Under 15s travel to Tenterden.

As ever a big thank you from the Junior Section to their sponsor, Rush, Witt & Wilson.
