Rye 1st XI were frustrated yet again by the weather last Saturday, as rain curtailed the game against Seaford, after only 20 overs were able to be bowled, in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera. In fact, it was the only game in Sussex rained off. Rye are still in 3rd position of Division 4 of the Sussex Premier League. This Saturday Rye travel to fourth placed Rottingdean in a game they will be seeking to win to maintain momentum going into the final 5 games of the season.

The 2nd XI endured another difficult day. Lost the toss yet again, and were invited to bat by Seaford. The opening pair of Joe Sarro (12/6/21/4) and Zak Hearsey (11.5/1/36/5) bowled a devastating opening burst which set up the game for Seaford. The line, length and pace of the young bowlers didn’t allow the batsmen many scoring options and wickets fell on a regular basis. Only S.Fielding (30) and O Rhys-Jones (27) managed any fluency. The up and down bounce and extravagant movement proved too much for Rye. The innings finally closing on 123 after 37.5 overs.

Seaford required 124 to win from a maximum of 62 overs. Patrick McCaughan (49*) and Mitch Ellingham (52) scored the bulk of the runs and saw Seaford over the line in the 28th over, despite Ross Pierce’s 2 for 25 butĀ Rye was unableĀ to exploit the wicket as Seaford had done.

This Saturday the 2nd XI host Rottingdean, and the 3rd XI travel to Firle to play St. Peters 5th XI. On Sunday Rye play Stone.

Next week the U13s play in The Sussex Junior Cricket Festival, travelling to Seaford on Monday and on Wednesday go to Lewes Priory. Then entertain Bexhill on Thursday. These games takeĀ all afternoon, offering the youngsters a taste of cricket. The U13s will be confident, having secured the Ashford League title for the third year in a row, with victory at Egerton. Thanks to unbeaten 30s from Ewan Fricker, Elise Jorgensen and Jack Barras.
