Rain Stops Play

It was almost predictable. The return of cricket on Saturdays heralded weather more akin to autumn than to mid-summer. The 2nd Xl were due to play at Iden, but an hour before play was due to start, the rain arrived and, without access to the pavilion due to Covid-19 guidance, it was thought best to cancel.

The 1st Xl were travelling east into Kent, so in a dash ahead of the incoming weather front, the team made their way to Hythe. Driving through heavy rain, the clouds lifted momentarily on the other side of the marsh. The skippers agreed to a 20 over game, as the forecast was not good.

Rye won the toss and in their 20 overs scored 153-4. Skipper Harry Smeed scored 44, and shared a 60 run opening partnership with James Hamilton, 44. Young Luke Payton smashed 44 not out. The rain appeared as the players huddled in a veranda consuming home made teas, the new norm.

The players waited patiently, ever optimistic….give it 10….looks brighter over there. Then the rain abated. Covers were removed, the players dashed out. Craig Pierce delivered the first ball…..short and slow….it could have been hit anywhere, the player mis-hit it straight to Mark Cook. A look of complete desolation as he returned to the pavilion. We followed him as the rain reappeared with a vengeance, and the game was called off.

This Saturday, the August Cup commences, replacing the cancelled league season. The 1st Xl travel to Crowhurst Park 1st Xl whilst the 2nd Xl host Robertsbridge 1st Xl. On subsequent Saturdays the 1st Xl host Eastbourne IIs, Seaford 1sts and Bexhill 1sts, and travel to Priory 2nds. The 2nd Xl travel to Iden 1st, Pett 1sts, Bexhill 3rds and Eastbourne 3rds.

Rye Cricket Club looks forward to making the most of the five Saturdays of competitive cricket.
