Rye 2nds took centre stage on Saturday with a 9 wicket defeat of local rivals Bexhill 2nds. Bexhill chose to bat but were soon in trouble as 15 year old Charlie Prentice took 3-22 and Harry Rhys-Jones 2-18 as Bexhill slumped to 34-5. Then Ross Pierce 2-14 and Ben Clifton 2-16 saw Bexhill 2nds dismissed for 76.

Rye’s batting made short work of the target as Rye won in just 11 overs. Spencer Fielding 36 off 39 balls and Ellis Hatter 17 saw Rye home quickly, in plenty of time to return to the Cricket Salts to watch the England match. This Saturday the 2nds host Eastbourne 3rds in a match sponsored by the Mermaid Inn.

The 1sts on Saturday entertained division leaders Brighton & Hove, formerly of the Premier League. Clearly, they aim to get back there as the team were on the Salts warming up at 9am, for the re-arranged start time of 11am.

Brighton batted first and Rye made an early inroad with the dismissal of Chris Atherton and then run machine Ryan Jakeman to leave Brighton 81-2. Leg spinners Dylan Harrison-Smith 1-37 and Martin Blincow 2-31 provided a measure of control, but were unable to create the breakthrough in the middle order.

So Michael Labb, 81 and Jack Chopping, 101 not out, struck a 192 run partnership that took Brighton to 274-5 off 45 overs.

In reply Rye made a positive start. Jackson Woodcock hit 47, Harry Smeed 53 and at 128-3 off 25 overs Rye were in the hunt. However, the cricketing gods were not smiling as both batters played on and then big hitter Luke Payton fell to a catch on the boundary by a 6ft 8in fielder, arms fully extended.

Rye ended all out for 185 in 39.3 overs. This Saturday Rye 1sts travel to play St Peters in Brighton.

The 3rd Xl played division leaders unbeaten Bexhill Strikers. Rye 3rds dismissed them for just 161. Richard Mattews 6-8 starred with the ball, along with Anthony Bradnum 3-32 and 14 year old Lexy Tuddenham 1-10 off 6 overs.

Rye’s reply saw them score only 45 on a wicket that deteriorated, with youngsters Matthew Best, 14 and Lexy Tuddenham, 10. Next Saturday Rye 3rds travel to Mountfield v Robertsbridge 4ths.

Weather has severely hampered junior cricket. The u16s have lost their last two games to rain, the U11b defeated Tenterden U11b on net run rate as rain put an end to the game, and the U11a lost by 20 runs to Tenterden U11a.

This Friday’s Bat and Trap fundraiser has been rescheduled for August 9 as part of the Bourne Moves sponsored cricket week. It will start at 6:30pm following the junior presentation evening.
