On April 29, Rye Bay Whites finally got to play their Wayne Russell Cup final against Little Common which, unfortunately, due to not being able to play at the Polgrove in Bexhill, was played at Little Common’s home ground – but this didn’t bother the boys at all .

They started brightly, dominating play but Little Common broke twice scoring two great goals. The Rye boys kept their heads and battled on, taking the game to Little Common but couldn’t get a clear break. George Colvin had a great game in defence alongside Ashton Casey to keep Little Common at bay, then in the second half Little Common scored again against the run of play but still our boys’ heads didn’t drop.

Jack Arter made a welcome return after a broken collar bone and he worked tirelessly in midfield supplying some great passes through to Henry Cooke our striker but as soon as he got the ball he was mobbed by players and still couldn’t find a way through.

Harrison Keen was heroic in goal, making some good decisions and sticking to them clearing the ball high up the pitch which opened up a chance for Henry and he took it superbly.

The boys battled until the final whistle as the game finished 3-1 in Little Commons favour but we couldn’t be prouder as coaches and parents for the guts and determination the team showed. Finishing second out of 18 teams is pretty incredible .

George Colvin got a unanimous vote as man of the match from players and coaches for his brilliant and fearless performance. Well done George.

George Colvin, man of the match

I’d like to say a massive thank you to the many supporters that turned out to cheer the boys on, it was very much appreciated. We have three league games left to play which if we win will put us in second place at the end of the season but I’ll keep you posted on our progress.
