Rye 1st XI v Seaford 1st XI

Last Saturday Rye 1sts hosted Seaford 1sts in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera. The prize for Rye for victory was more than just 30 points, but also the opportunity to overtake Seaford and move into 3rd place in Division 3 East.

Rye lost the toss, and were invited to bat on an extremely breezy afternoon at The Cricket Salts. Rye scored 220-9, thanks to a century opening partnership between James Hamilton (55) and Harry Smeed (46), which came in just 20 overs. With support from Luke Payton (36) and George Wathen (22), the momentum was maintained, even though Seaford’s bowling improved, mainly through William Lucas with 6-36.

In reply Seaford came up against the whirlwind pace of Rye Concepts MOM, Altaf Ahmad Khan who struck with the ball/ taking 5 wickets to blow away the Seaford top order. Seaford found themselves 42-6. their lower order limped on as William Lucas hit 32 and Zak Hearsey 21, however the returning pace bowler, Tobias Farrow, with 2 wickets tidied up the innings, as Seaford fell for 145.

Rye 2nd XI v Firle 1st XI

The 2nds had tough a day with the bat. Rye got off to a very bright start reducing Firle 1sts to 77-7. Nick Fanthorpe (40*) and Alex Grainger (41) helped Firle post 189-9. Rye’s innings never got started, as early wickets undermined their reply. The 2nds slipped to 88 all out, with their recurring issue of low scores and the inability to finish teams off.

Rye 3rd XI v Pevensey 3rd XI

Rye third team travelled to Ninfield to face Pevensey thirds for their latest league fixture on a blustery afternoon. On winning the toss Rye elected to field first.

Two early wickets were taken through the bowling of George Jempson who went on to claim figures of 2-34 from 8 overs as he reduced the home side to 12-2. A 67-run third wicket partnership re-built the Pevensey innings before Guy Moore was caught off the first ball from Beth Farrow having scored 45. Farrow then claimed another wicket to leave Pevensey on 120-4, finishing with figures of 2-23 from 6 overs. Pevensey reached 164-5 before James Dullaway (76) was caught off the bowling of Reece Martin (1-29 from 8 overs). Ollie Moore (12*) and Fred Wallis (23*) saw Pevensey to 202-5 from their 40 overs.

Pevensey took early wickets with Josh Dowsett claiming figures of 3-14 from 5 overs. Opener Ed Jury provided resistance and in a third wicket partnership of 34 with Alex Stone took Rye to 62-4. Jury eventually fell to the bowling of Jack Chapman (1-21) with the score on 77-5 having scored 55. Pevensey then continued to take regular wickets with none of the other Rye batsmen being able to reach double figures. The other Pevensey wicket takers were Caleb Laloo (2-33), Ollie Moore (1-16) and Fred Wallis (2-16) as Rye were dismissed for 105.

This Saturday the 1st XI travel to play Eastbourne 2nds on The Saffrons, looking to retain their hold on 3rd position. The 2nds host Glynde 2nds in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn.
