Rye 1st XI travelled to Glynde on Saturday to play Glynde 1st XI in a promotion tussle, as the teams above them have faltered. Rye were weakened by late withdrawals due to work and illness. Glynde won the toss and batted first. Immediately Craig Pierce, Rye’s opening bowler, struck taking 2-30 and the Rye bowlers started wearing away the Glynde batting. Martin Blincow took 3-28 removing the middle order, Harry Smeed chipped in with 1-49 and Chanuka Dilshan took a hat trick, 3-21 off 9 overs as Glynde stuttered to 130-9, but Matthew Cramp 40 took the score to 153 before he was run out.

Rye’s reply was disappointing as a series of batsmen got starts, but then got out. Only James Hamilton, 59, made a positive contribution, against less than daunting bowling on a placid wicket. Rye were all out for 126. Glynde as a result moved into 2nd place in Division 3 East.

This Saturday, Rye 1st host Rottingdean 1st, another promotion rival, at the Rye Cricket Salts, a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera, in a must win game, before they travel to relegation threatened Seaford on the last Saturday of the season.

Rye 2nds hosted Seaford 2nds on Saturday, with a weakened side following 1st team call ups. Rye won the toss and bowled first. Fred Mackenzie, 3-19, got Rye off to a positive start, reducing Seaford to 45-3, then Ross Pierce ripped out the middle order taking 5-27 and Seaford 107-7. However, Seaford through Jonathan Robards, 55, recovered and their innings was finished by Mark Cook 2-27 on 160 all out.

Rye got off to a flying start, as Ewan Fricker hit 55 and Spencer Fielding 20. Then wickets fell, Ellis Hatter, 25, kept the score moving, but a nervous 8th wicket partnership of Ross Pierce, 12 no and Freddie Mackenzie 11 no saw Rye home by 2 wickets with just 3 balls to spare. An exact opposite outcome to the reverse fixture, earlier in the season.

This Saturday Rye 2nds travel to play Glynde 2nds.

The 3rd XI had their own illness issues on Saturday with 2 drop outs on Saturday morning. Then another player was injured whilst Rye were bowling first. This permitted Sidley 2nds to get 199-8. Toby Channon 3-27 and Oscar Wincott-Stone the pick of the bowlers. With only 8 batsmen, Rye 3rds fell short on 102 all out. Will Morfitt, 34 no, carrying his bat.

Despite the defeat, Rye 3rds with the youngest side in the division finished a very creditable 3rd place. This Saturday they play Icklesham in a charity fund raiser, and then play Bells Yew Green 4ths on Sept 2nd in a friendly.
