Last Saturday Rye slipped to defeat against St Peters, meaning St Peters increased their advantage at the summit of Division 3 East. Five games left in the season means Rye will be looking to secure second place and a play off fixture versus the team second in Division 3 West, for a place in Division 2 in 2022.
The Salts at Rye was very wet after the ongoing wet summer. St Peters won an important toss and Rye were batting first. Rye reached 136 -8 off their 45 overs. Harry Smeed with 45 from 49 balls and Reuben Collingwood 20 profited with the bat, whilst the innings struggled to cope with a slow surface. Marco Lincoln with 3-21 the pick of the St Peters bowlers.
In reply Craig Pierce removed danger man Max Wheatley cheaply. However as the wicket dried, batting became easier, as former Sussex player Toby Pierce hit 23 and overseas player Nimand Madushanka hit 66 off just 47 balls. St Peters eased to their target in 26 overs. Rye now have to focus on winning their remaining five games, the first of which next Saturday is away to third placed Glynde.
Rye 2nds miserable season continued with a nine wicket defeat to St Peters 2nds. Rye were invited to bat and after a quick fire 20-0 Rye lost five wickets in the space of nine balls. All caught, and four ducks. Tommy Nunn, 33, offered resistance but Rye were dismissed for 80. St Peters made short work of the target passing Rye’s score in 20 overs. This Saturday the 2nds host Glynde 2nds as they seek the first elusive victory of the season.
Rye 3rds chalked up a victory against Sidley 2nds in a low scoring thriller. Rye 3s battled to 95 all out in 38.5 overs. Five players made double figures but the ball was too good for the bat. Lawrence Wray took 4-15. Sidley’s response was undone by the young Jempson brothers. Sidley were reduced to 40-8. George Jempson 5-23 and David Jempson 3-8 off their seven overs. Lawrence Wray batting at 11 got 26 not out as Sidley crept close. But Johnny Broad and Alex Stone struck, to dismiss Sidley 2nds for 79 in 22.3 overs.
