The weather this season for Rye Town FC has been dire: it was only on Saturday, February 15 that it was possible to photograph a match when the reserves were playing at home.

Barnaby Osborne, club captain, wrote this report:
“After last week’s 1- 0 win, we followed up with a very similar performance today against a Hooe side whose position in the bottom half of Division 2 doesn’t do them justice.
“The message to the side was similar to last week’s – play, play, and play a bit more, and be defensively solid and take our chances. The first ten to fifteen minutes took us time to get into our flow, with Hooe at times looking dangerous in transition after some slack passing from us. Luckily, this went unpunished. The next half hour was much better; there were some great passages of play which released our forward players time and time again with former Rye goalkeeper Lee Vator making some good brave saves, as well as us missing some good chances.
“The second half started well with some better football and this culminated in our goal. A few passes played in our box between JP and the defence sucked Hooe in, allowing time and space for ‘Whiskers’ to play a fantastically-timed passed into Luke to slot past Lee in goal.

“Further chances came and weren’t taken, but we conserved our lead well with a goal line clearance and a superb save from JP to keep us ahead. With a selection of injuries and fatigue setting in, the importance of our squad came to the fore, our depth of quality keeping Hooe at arm’s length to see the game out.
“Very similar messaging to last week was imparted to the team: solid defensive, good game management, and we took our chances. The team listened and played well.
“We’re now into a semi, against who, I don’t know and I don’t simply care because if we turn up and play with the togetherness and quality we have, we will beat them. Star of the match was ‘Whiskers’ who ran, ran, ran a bit more, giving fantastic assistance for the goal and slotting into multiple positions when required.”
