The end of the season is approaching, and Rye’s 6 wicket victory over Eastbourne 2nds on Saturday, August 21 at The Saffrons, means Rye only need 7 points from the final two matches to secure a place in the Division 3 play off final on Saturday September 11.
Rye made the perfect start, winning the toss and putting Eastbourne into bat. Then Craig Pierce struck twice in the first over. A blow Eastbourne never recovered from. Eastbourne went from 1-2 to 17-5, and were finally dismissed for 95. All 5 bowlers chipping in with wickets, Tobias Farrow with 3-18 the most successful.
Rye eased home to the target for the loss of 4 wickets in 22.1 overs. Opener Dan Stickels carried his bat for 44 not out with Tobias Farrow 21 not out.
This Saturday Rye 1sts host Crawley Eagles in pursuit of those 7 points.
Rye 2nds enjoyed their closest result of the season last Saturday in a 2 wicket defeat by Laughton 1st XI. Rye won the toss and elected to bat. James Hamilton struck 119 in a controlled innings as Rye amassed 207-6 in 40 overs. Laughton got off to a great start as Jamie Russell hit 51 before his demise at the hands of Callum Haddaway threatened a Rye victory. But Haddaway suffered an injury whilst fielding and was carried from the field. It meant Rye’s bowling resources were stretched and a man short in the field. The result was that Laughton struck the winning run off the last ball of the match 8 wickets down. This Saturday Rye 2nds travel to play Battle 1sts.
Rye 3rds lost to local rivals Pett 2nds, but it was again another good performance by the young players experiencing their first season of adult cricket. George and David Jempson bowled 9 overs each for 1-21 and 2-17 respectively, and with the bat George Jempson hit 47 and 14 year old Joseph Kemsley hit 31. Pett 2nds hit 170-4 and Rye 3rds finished on 135-7.
This week Rye 3rds travel to Bexhill 4ths.
Rye U11A defeated Rye U11B by 25 runs on Monday as the much delayed fixture was finally played. An excellent game as the young players demonstrated the cricketing skills they have developed this season. The result leaves Rye U11A top of the Ashford & District League West, but awaiting other results.
