Volunteers happily set about getting everything ready for the first RHSC Sailability sail of the summer programme at Rye Harbour Sailing Club on Saturday May 18.

New sailors Kerry and Jerry get ready to go

The weather defied the forecast and the day brought a gentle breeze from the south east, making for ideal sailing conditions. With safety given priority this year, two of our sailors can be seen (right) ready and waiting to step on board Luey, the Sailability dinghy, an adapted Sport 16. This was also an opportunity to try out some lifejackets generously funded by the Rye Community Shop Fund.

With high water at 11:43am we were treated to bacon sandwiches, cakes and cups of tea and coffee as we waited for the tide. The sail was enjoyed by sailors and volunteers alike and there was no commercial traffic due that might delay getting on the water. After the sail the bar was open and burgers and sausages in rolls were a tasty snack for any hungry sailors and volunteers. A huge thank you to all volunteers who turned out on the day to help make it such a successful event.

Luey off Camber Sands

Over the winter Luey had undergone an extensive maintenance programme and can be seen here undergoing sea trials.

RHSC Sailability enables people with disabilities to enjoy the fun and freedom of sailing. Our next Sailability ‘Try Sailing’ day is on Saturday June 8 from 1:30pm. If you would like to come and sail or get involved as a volunteer and in return have the opportunity to learn to sail please email carolinewylson@btinternet.com or call 01797 223112.
