Rye Town players and staff worked for hour after hour during the week on the football pitch to remove surface water in order to get it playable for the eagerly anticipated fixture against title contenders Westfield on Saturday, January 13.
The pitch turned out to be perfect with a result to match, with Rye Town triumphant in a 5-0 win. Goals from debutant Callum Hadaway, skipper Darren Warne, Anthony Hughes, Sam Hesmer and Charlie Stevens secured the win. The Playden Oast player of the match award was shared between Callum and Charlie.
After the game came the welcome news that Rye had been awarded a further three points by the league following Punnets Town not being able to raise a side in a scheduled match in December 2023. The resulting six points gained placed Rye Town top of the league by two points over second-placed Crowhurst with a game in hand.
This Saturday, January 20, Rye Firsts are at home again v. St Leonards Social, in the Macron Cup.
The reserves are heading to local Division Two title contenders Northiam, hoping to gain momentum following last week’s 4-1 cup win against Herstmonceaux.
