Saturday May 5 and Rye Town FC travelled down the road to play seventh-placed Sedlescombe in the East Sussex Premier League, in need of a victory as they endeavoured to finish in the top three this season.
Just 17 minutes into the game, Sedlescombe took the lead, Town pushed for an equaliser and had the reward two minutes before the interval with Alfie Weller bringing the teams all square in the 43rd minute, one all at half time.
Five minutes into the restart and Sedlescombe restored their lead in the 50th minute.  The match stayed at 2-1 until the final five minutes in which three more goals were scored in a frenetic finale.
Town drew level in the 84th minute with a strike from Sammy Foulkes and in the 88th minute Kenny Butchers converted and thought that he had won the game and all three points for Town.
However, it wasn’t to be. Sedlescombe somehow found the character and resolve to notch up a last-minute goal and bring the score to 3-3 and a share of the points. Town’s man of the match was Rob Levett.
The point means that Town has dropped to fourth position in the league behind Sidley by two points, so it is vital that Town win the final game of the season this Saturday away to Crowhurst and hope that Sidley come unstuck away to second-place Hollington.
A win for Town and a loss for Sidley on Saturday will see Town secure third position and crown a pretty successful end to a long season for our local team and cup winners.
The game at Crowhurst on May 12 is a 3pm kick off and the match sponsors are Cinque Port Sweep.
