We had another great turn-out for the increasingly popular Two Generation tournament this year. All the grass courts were full from dawn until dusk as almost 100 players young and old slugged it out for glory. Our youngest player this year was five, our oldest (and most sneaky server, who shall remain nameless) was eighty! We battled through early rain, but the sun came out and some great tennis was on display.
Jonny Leslie and his grandson Luke Pakenham won the senior court for the second time running, but it was not all plain sailing. Packenham’s sizzling serves drew gasps from the crowds as they whizzed over, past and occasionally through the terrified returners. The junior section this year was formidable and there was great potential on show. There were lots of spectacular rallies, as mums, dads, aunts and uncles dashed around like headless chickens, determined not to let their charges down! The courts rang out all day with shouts of ‘Go mum!’ and ‘Ohhhh, dad!’
All enjoyed a lavish tea, after which the pace of play slowed somewhat. Play closed at about 6pm, as exhausted oldies dragged their partners off the courts, vowing to come again next year.
