The ever popular Globe Inn on Military Road, Rye, has applied to Rother District Council to expand.
The application is for a new detached ‘agricultural looking’ building on the site of their car parking area which will be linked back into their main building.
The proposed extension will contain the pub’s relocated toilets as well as a new garage and store room.
The application also includes their plans to expand the first floor with an extension to provide a licensed area and a new fire escape to Rye Hill at the back.
The Globe Inn said, “Our application is to build a new building on the site of a building since demolished on the immediate Rye side of the Globe, built in the 1870s, adjacent and adjoining buildings had become a forge and a blacksmith’s shop with stables to the rear and a cave beneath the road was used as the pub cellar. The forge was a single storey building of substance with brick wall.”
The Globe Inn first opened as a pub in 1834 and was then largely used by local residents and men working on the Military Canal.
