Members of St Mary’s knitting group are creating special pussy hats in Rye Bonfire Society colours in the run up to our annual conflagration on Saturday November 11. Each hat is unique in design and execution and a selection is available from Savia’s gift and framing shop on Lion Street for £10. The proceeds go to Samara’s Aid Appeal which support refugees in camps in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.
The pussy hat phenomenon was unleashed by president of the US, Donald Trump, when old remarks of his about how he likes to behave towards women resurfaced. Fortunately, these cannot be repeated in a family newpaper. Many millions of pussy hats are believed to be in existence but as far as we know, these are the only black and red ones.
Local people have been huge supporters of Samara’s aid appeal, with many van loads of quality clothes, bedding and other supplied having been collected and delivered to the camps.
Sandra Lanigan, one of the members of St Mary’s knitting group said: “we are very grateful to Rye Bonfire Society for allowing us to use their colours and for Vanessa Savia who has been kindly selling these for us all year through her shop. They have helped us raise a lot of money for this worthwhile cause”.
