On Saturday, June 11 St Mary’s Rye hosted the second social gathering for Ukrainian families and their hosts. These wonderful events give all those involved the chance to socialise, to gain advice, to have super refreshments and provide a place for children to play.
Anthony Kimber welcomed everyone and Rev’d Paul White, the rector of Rye, said that the church of St Mary’s was a safe refuge for all and that they would always have a warm welcome there. Andi Rivett, mayor of Rye, continued: “I would like to welcome you to our wonderful town of Rye, and while you are here our town is your town.”
Sally-Ann Hart, local MP, added her warm welcome and praised the Ukrainians for their resilience during the awful war that is ravaging their country. Rye and the families who are hosting them are offering a place of safety and a place in which to feel cared for.
Paul Goring, the town crier, gave his address: “Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! Be it known – on behalf of the right worshipful mayor, his wise council, St Mary’s church and all the citizens of Rye, we are delighted to welcome our friends from Ukraine to our historic town (Laskarvo prosymo do nashoho mista). We hope that you have settled in comfortably and are making many new friends in our community.”
Alongside all those who addressed the Ukrainian families was Olena, originally from Kharkiv, who arrived three weeks ago translating so that everyone was able to understand how warmly they were being made welcome by the people of Rye. She did a wonderful job and we are thankful for her input.
Anthony Kimber masterminded Rye Hub H4U having worked with the authorities and Rother Voluntary Action to set up a structure under the aegis of East Sussex County Council to link hosts and guests in our part of Rother district. Caroline Drummond was one of the first hosts and is working alongside him.
Thank you to all who took part by preparing lovely food and drink; in welcoming our guests; by providing clothing, toiletries and toys; and special thanks to the knitting group for their wonderful hand-knitted clothes.
