Last Saturday, Rye recorded two big wins and a near miss. At the Rye Cricket Salts the 1st XI in a fixture sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera, defeated Portslade 1st XI by 167 runs. Skipper Harry Smeed won the toss and openers Dylan Harrison-Smith, 79 and Ruben Collingwood, 51 shared a 147 run opening partnership, Their dismissals brought together Luke Payton, 101 and Jackson Woodcock, 27. They shared a 133 run partnership. The centrepiece was the destructive blade of Luke Payton. His 101 came from just 40 balls, 14 4s and 5 x 6s. One over went for 32 runs. Harry Smeed hit the last two balls for six over the pavilion, as Rye ended on 301-4 off 45 overs.

Portslade struggled in reply as Craig Pierce 2-19 and Shohel Ahmed 1-17, reduced them to 20-3. The only resistance was Sam Cooper, 56, as Portslade slumped from 125-5 to 134 all out. The emphatic victory leaves Rye in 4th position in Division 3 East. This Saturday they travel to Cuckfield 2nds.

The 2nds travelled to Mayfield 3rds on Saturday. Rye won the toss and elected to bat. Rye have struggled with the bat this season but on this occasion Rye posted 220 all out. Ed Jury with 60 led the way, as Blake Rouse 33, Paul Hitchcott 29, Richard Matthews 23, and Ross Pierce 24 N.O. all contributed.

In reply Mayfield made a positive response, at 110-2. However, the young guns of Rye Juniors stepped up to ensure a Rye victory by 57 runs. Pace bowler James Archer took 4-23 and spinner Matthew Best claimed his first senior “five for” with 5-34 as Mayfield ended 163-9 off 40 overs.

This Saturday Rye 2nds host Willingdon 1st XI in a match sponsored by the Mermaid Inn at the Rye Cricket Salts.

The 3rd XI hosted Bexhill Strikers and nearly recorded a victory against their more experienced opponents. Strikers posted 221-8 off 40 overs. All the Rye bowlers took wickets, Tom O’Neill 2-35 and Neil Archer 2-56 the most successful. In reply, Rye 3rds finished on 191-5 off 40 overs. Jonathan Walczak, 56 and Grahame Burton, 38, with Sam Bradnum, 36, nearly saw Rye home.

This Saturday Rye 3rds host Westfield 2nds at Icklesham.

Rye under 11s finish match season in fine spirits

After a fun filled season, the under 11s of Rye CC played a fun inter-club match on Monday. Not all were available due to holidays, but a Charlie Cooke team pipped a Luke Rogers team by 7 runs.

Coaching continues on Tuesdays throughout August, 6pm – 8pm at The Salts. There is a cricket camp on August 8 and 9 as part of the Bournes Moves Cricket Week, 10am – 3pm on both days. Cost is £25 per day or £40 for both.
