Thursday, May 8 marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day and the end of war in Europe in 1945. Plans are coming together for official events locally and nationally, as well as street parties and beacon lighting.
As a country and as a town we will remember those who served in the second world war, both in the armed forces and on the home front. For many people in Rye it will also be a time to remember the service of friends and family.
The impact of the second world war on Rye was stark – almost impossible to imagine now. If you get the chance do visit Rye Heritage Centre when it shows the story of the conflict in Rye using the town model. You’ll see where bombs landed and hear how local people coped with the destruction. It’s a unique account of life in Rye from the outbreak of the conflict in 1939 through to VE Day in 1945. There will be daily shows from May 3.
Five years ago, at the start of the pandemic, Rye marked the 75th anniversary in a very different way. You can read about the virtual celebrations here.
