Don’t be a prostate chancer

“Don’t be a prostate chancer get checked for prostate cancer!”

This is the slogan that one of the boys at Rye Rugby Club came up with when I spoke to them about raising funds for the charity Prostate Cancer UK.

I’m Michelle and my husband Paul plays for Rye Rugby Club. I asked the team if they would be up for some fun fundraising, as they have decided they would like to raise funds every year for a different charity. This year it’s Prostate Cancer UK.

This is a cause very close to my heart as my Dad died of prostate cancer over 11 years ago, at just 59 years old. He didn’t talk about it and ignored the symptoms. He was diagnosed too late and it was in the bone, stage four. I feel strongly that men should talk more to help others.

Men are very awkward and shy when talking about their health issues. This is why it’s important to make them aware that prostate cancer kills 11,000 men each year unnecessarily when a simple blood test could save their life.

I came up with the calendar idea which I feel is a fun way to highlight awareness, so asked my friends Scott and Malcolm from Asrphoto to take the photographs (Malcolm was diagnosed with prostate cancer early thanks to a simple blood test and is all clear now – thank goodness).

So please support us once the calendar goes on sale this summer.

It will be printed by our very own Adams of Rye and will be on sale for just £5. Some local shops have already said they are happy to stock it, a fabulous gift for your girlfriend, wife, Nan, Mum, Auntie or friends.

Let’s help Prostate UK spread awareness to all our men.

I’d like to add a special thanks to all the players of Rye Rugby Club that were keen, willing, and not shy at all!

The calendar is cheeky (apologies for the pun) fun and tasteful. And I can’t wait to see the finished product.

The day of the shoot was freezing but the participants were brilliant. And thanks to Scott and Malc for driving all the way from Southampton.

We are also hoping to arrange a mobile unit to come along to the club to do a simple blood test for all local men. Watch this space!
