Rotary Club amble in Bramber

Following a wonderful celebration of the Rotary Club of Rye and Winchelsea’s 75th anniversary and a great year, donating around £10,000 to local charities and good causes, now comes the annual fellowship event. For over 30 years members have shared an “amble”, This involves members and their partners going somewhere interesting for two or three days, walking, visiting the local sights and thoroughly enjoying each other’s company.

This year we went to Bramber, just north of Shoreham. We stayed in the delightful village, on arrival playing pétanque (boules) on the site of the ruins of Bramber Castle, high up and peaceful.

The first day we visited Lancing Chapel. A beautiful building in the gothic style but, in fact, consecrated in 1911 and completed in 1936. A glorious organ, stunning rose window and ancient artefacts make it truly impressive. This was followed by a saunter past the amazing collection of houseboats moored in Shoreham, another must visit. Convivial pre-dinner drinks and the very social meal together rounded off the first day.

Day two had us out and ambling to Steyning. Such a pretty town with a lovely church and very impressive museum, well planned and laid out with varied and interesting contents. The amble continued by the river in the shadow of the Downs as we returned for another very social late lunch in Bramber. A staunch three took on another river walk in the afternoon; another staunch group played boules again as we then prepared for our pre-dinner drinks. The only one to complete all activities was our mighty leader, the incomparable Noel Varley. A very merry dinner together completed the day.
After another fine breakfast we all headed for home. Fully relaxed and satisfied with a delightful amble in Bramber for 2023.
