There’s always something going on in Rye, with plenty to see and do. Here’s Heidi Foster’s review of a busy weekend.
On Saturday evening, November 30, 2024, the Parish Church of St May in Rye offered an evening of Opera Arias, sung by Thomasin Trezise (soprano), Paul Hopwood and Philip Smith. The audience enjoyed the wonderful voices presenting known arias and and songs from musicals. It was organised by Rye Harbour Sailability, a charity solely run by volunteers, taking neurodiverse individuals of all ages plus their accompanying carers, sailing. Whenever they return from the dinghy experience one can see just how much they enjoyed the journey. The fantastic kitchen volunteers usually have dinner ready and a hot cup of coffee or tea.
On Sunday afternoon, December 1, the Winchelsea Beach members Club offered a totally different experience, the amazing Rye band, The Rockitmen. The bar was very busy and the place (very festive) full of an eclectic group of fans from Rye and around. Tim Phillips, front man, was extraordinary, as were all the other musicians. Tim asked each table what song they wanted and suggestions were coming thick and fast, from the past and present of their repertoire as well as songs they didn’t all know except the electric guitarist Rick Nesbit, (our local Eric Clapton) who knew most and the others fell in. They ended the first set with their theme song, ‘We are the Champions’ with everyone joining in.
(This Sunday evening was film night in the Kino, The Thomas Crown Affair, in the very comfortable Blue room. A rather old film, 1968 but very entertaining. Steve Mc Queen executes a bank heist without incriminating himself. Though it is not all plain sailing he gets away with it.
It was an interesting weekend and looking at the Rye News events calendar there are many more to come.
