Starting secondary school

My name is Audrey and I’m eleven years old. I went to a tiny primary school. After my eleventh birthday, I felt even more ready to move on to a new school.

Choosing a new school was hard. I went to visit a few secondary schools: Homewood, Ark Alexandra and Rye College. I didn’t like Rye College at first but then I realised it was a great school. Everyone was so happy and friendly. I was impressed by the music, art, science, dance and drama departments.

The transition days were fun. I felt very independent on those days as I took the bus to the school and paid for my own food. It was fun to sit and chat to my friends. I tried some different lessons at a slightly higher level, and luckily they weren’t challenging. I made some new friends, but I still have my other older friends who I know well.

I had a good six years at my small school, St Thomas ‘s Primary in Winchelsea. I made a lot of great friends there over the years. Sadly, my best friend Zoe moved away and left our school. I cried a lot, but quickly made plenty of new friends. I learnt many different things and knew my teachers well. Three of my good friends are going to different schools but we stay in touch. I still miss Zoe, but I’m really looking forward to starting at Rye College in September.

  2. Audrey, ( lovely name..my mother had the same name.) , I enjoyed reading your article…and also wish you all the best when term starts for autumn.
It brought back memories for me that I had to change schools three times at primary school and know making friends and learning new rules is difficult..I also recall my best friends left and how sad I was…two emerigrated, one to New Zealand, one to Australia ..the other friend went back to USA.
And in those days there were no internet..I phones etc..so I was not able to keep in touch..
But I didn’t have to change schools from primary to senior. Like you…so you are being very positive about your big change. I am sure you will do very well.

    • That was a lovely reply and I would like to say thank you. I was sad to read that three of your friends went to different countries. My friend moved to Doncaster and I am still upset but not as much as I was.

      • It was very kind of you to reply to my comments to your article..( I apologise for not replying earlier.)
No need to thank me… at the time when my friends did leave in my primary school. But I am pleased you are able to keep in touch with your friend in Doncaster …though seeing each other is better than long distance communication…but hopefully you will be able to meet up some time.
I do hope the start of term at the new school/college has been a positive experience and will continue to be enjoyable and you will thrive in all the activities and enjoy learning.

  3. Thank you, Audrey, for sharing your thoughts and feelings about this important decision. You’ve written about them in such a professional style, I’m sure you’d make an outstanding journalist in the future. We look forward to welcoming you to Rye College… you’re going to have a fantastic time!
