I love bonfire night in Rye. There really is nothing like it. It’s an assault on all the senses – the sight of parade, the sound of the drums and fireworks, the smell of the torches and bonfire. A really happy and friendly evening for locals and thousands of visitors alike.
A local success story and something Rye should be hugely proud of.
But it doesn’t just happen. Putting on such a brilliant night, year in year out, is an incredible achievement for Rye & District Bonfire Society and everyone else involved. It’s all the more impressive when you realise it is all funded and sponsored locally.
So whatever you did this year to make it happen before, during and after the night – thank you! From the parade around town, to the bonfire on the Salts and the fireworks to end the evening, it was fantastic.
Plus a special thank you to everyone who cleared up afterwards. By Sunday morning, in time for the Remembrance parade, the streets were clean thanks to the volunteers out early in the morning collecting the rubbish. Another job volunteers now have to do.
Next year will be the 30th bonfire night since it restarted in 1995. Please support Rye Bonfire Society by making it extra special. Here’s the link to the society’s crowdfunder site.
And if you weren’t there on the night, have a look at the superb pictures and video taken by KT and Martin Bruce. You’ll find them in the news section of this week’s Rye News
