A great raconteur

Graham Clive Rattenbury   01/03/1953 – 16/10/2024

Graham was a long time resident and lover of Rye, living in Udimore Road, Mermaid Street and, finally, Strand Court.

Growing up in Warehorne, teenage Graham started a Saturday job working in Rye for Robert Peake and quickly developed a great love of antiques; eventually branching into restoration. He travelled all over the UK and abroad to attend auctions and he cherished many of his ‘finds’.

From a little boy, Graham loved history and took pleasure in researching the provenance of the items he bought. He was also very well read, collecting numerous old editions as well as having a great love of classical music and opera. Before his health deteriorated, Graham was a great walker and loved getting out in the fresh air to enjoy the countryside.

Graham was well known in the community and many people in the locality will remember pleasurable evenings spent with this great raconteur. However, his ill health made him a bit of a recluse in recent years.

Graham was admitted to Conquest Hospital on Friday October 11 where he spent his last days surrounded by his siblings. He will be sadly missed by us – John, Gill, Midge and Charlotte.

Rest in peace baby brother.
