Sunday, November 10, was the first time Fairlight’s new and complete war memorial was the focus for the village’s act of Remembrance, organised by the Royal British Legion.
The new Cornish granite memorial, more than two metres tall, is situated outside St Andrew’s Church, Coastguard Lane, off Battery Hill, in Fairlight. On it are inscribed 48 names of Fairlight men and women who lost their lives in the two world wars of the 20th century.
The Fairlight community has worked long and hard since 2018 to remedy the fact that the existing war memorial plaques inside the church failed to acknowledge all those whose names should be represented. Much research has been needed to assemble the full list of names. An extensive campaign has been necessary to raise the funds required to commission, create and erect the memorial. Generous support and donations great and small have come from many individuals, organisations and military associations.
The formal dedication of the memorial, in the presence of his majesty’s lord lieutenant of East Sussex, relatives of the fallen and members of the Fairlight community, will be held on Saturday, November 30 at 11 am at St Andrew’s Church, Battery Hill, Fairlight.
