Some original Captain Pugwash sketches by John Ryan are among the lots up for auction at Rye Bonfire Society’s fundraising event in July. The drawings, by one of Rye’s most celebrated artists, are expected to generate a lot of interest.
The annual Auction of Promises will take place in the Tudor Room at the Mermaid Inn on Wednesday July 3, doors will open for viewing at 7pm with the bidding beginning at 7:30pm. This is Rye Bonfire Society’s biggest fundraising event of the year.
Admission is £5 per person, a glass of wine is included, along with a catalogue detailing the extensive array of lots on offer.
If you can’t wait to see what lots they have going under the hammer, details of many of the items up for grabs in the auction this year, are on the bonfire society’s Instagram and Facebook pages. Although there may be a few surprises on the night, we just had to share news of the exciting appearance of some original Captain Pugwash sketches by John Ryan, kindly donated by his daughter, and loyal friend of Rye Bonfire Society, Isabel Ryan.
Fundraising is a year-round task for the bonfire society as they do not receive financial assistance from local or regional councils.
The fundraising team really do rely on support from everyone in the town to keep their annual spectacular torchlight procession and firework display free for all to attend. It is one of, if not the biggest event in Rye’s busy and eclectic calendar and one that really boosts the town’s economy.
Kevin Wall of Rye Auction Galleries will be overseeing proceedings but if anyone is unable to attend the auction in person a catalogue is available now by emailing funding@ryebonfire.co.uk.
Absentee bids can also be placed, details and deadlines will be advised when requesting a catalogue.
