Always welcome

Since spring 2022, there has been an arrival and support hub for Ukrainian families taking refuge in the Rye area. The hub is linked to similar ones in other parts of Rother and Hastings.

At the start of the Homes for Ukraine refugee scheme, over 2 years ago, some 25 families were engaged with the hub but now the number has dropped to around 10. Despite the threats back home, some have returned to Ukraine; some have moved elsewhere in UK.

On Tuesday July 2 we held the latest tea meeting, kindly hosted by the River Haven Hotel. Seven families attended, some with their children. These gatherings provide a welcome opportunity to catch up with issues, hear about what is happening in their homeland and publicise future events in the Rye area.

Mayor Andy Stuart meets Rye’s Ukrainian families

The mayor of Rye, Cllr Andy Stuart and Niki Stuart, who host one of the families, attended to catch up with developments. He spoke of the continued welcome provided by the town of Rye.

Susan Gedge of Rother Voluntary Action was also on hand for help and advice. There will be another event next month.
