Celebrating 150 years in business

This year Bournes Moves is turning 150 and the removal firm, which is now based in Rye Harbour Road, is marking the milestone by thanking the local community for its support over the years. One of Rye’s oldest companies still in business, Thomas Bourne started the firm from his Bridge Place home in the town in 1875.

Throughout 2025 the company is donating £150 every month to a different local charity or not-for-profit organisation to support their work, and the local community gets to decide who that will be.

A spokesperson for Bournes Moves said: “Each month we’ll advertise the opening of nominations which can be made by commenting on the official post on Facebook. Nominations close on the 20th of the month and shortlisted nominees will then be put to a Facebook vote for the public to decide the winner. Organisations can be nominated and shortlisted any number of times during the 12 months, but can only win once, so we’re encouraging people to keep nominating their favourite organisations in future months even if they don’t win first time around.”

The appeal for nominations has already had a good response. “We’ve had lots of really great causes already nominated for the first January prize so if readers would like their organisation to be in with a chance please remember to nominate by January 20.”
