Last weekend marked the 25th anniversary of Rhythm Riot, hosted at Pontins in Camber. The ‘Big Silver Jubilee’ event drew fans and supporters form far and wide dressed in 50s gear ready for a weekend packed with music and events, including a procession on Sunday of classic cars.

The cavalcade of chrome started at Pontins; a spectacular sight with vehicles of every description, many having been lovingly restored and polished within an inch of their lives, travelling in convoy watched and cheered on by an appreciative audience with a backdrop of clear blue sky and glorious sunshine.

The vehicles passed through the Landgate to applause from the thousands who lined the streets. The cars continued in a full circuit of the town before repeating the spectacle, much to the crowds’ delight, and culminating at the station car park awaiting the judging.

What a sight. The car park was nose to tail with American and European classics, the sun glinting off the polished paintwork and sparkling chrome, the occupants dressed in period costume admiring each others’ steeds and swapping stories of barn finds, nut and bolt restorations, classic car events past and present and many wondering what their next project might be.

Amongst all these amazing cars was a silver Aston Martin DB6, a firm favourite with many, including our mayor, Andy Rivett who awarded the owner with a trophy for the mayor’s favourite but many other vehicles owners also made it to the rostrum and various awards were presented.

The cavalcade then started to disperse, many making their way back to Pontins for more live music, dancing and fun before making their way home on Monday morning. If you missed out this year, the photos below will give you a flavour of what you could see next time but be sure not to miss the 26th Rhythm Riot. It’s quite a spectacle and the added influx of visitors and spectators must have given Rye traders a lot of much deserved and very welcomed extra business.
