RNLI Rye Harbour’s crew training takes place at least twice a week and is not postponed if the weather is bad. Our volunteer crews go out in all weathers and this enables them to be ready and fully confident when there is a shout to face. They are prepared to drop everything and risk their lives to save others at a moment’s notice.

Not all training can take place at the station so all crew are able to access world class training at RNLI College at Poole. Around 1,200 volunteers, both shore and lifeboat, take part in one or more of over forty different courses on offer at the college each year.

The training takes place in first-class facilities, which include well-equipped rooms, a learning-resource centre, live-engine workshops and sea survival centre which is state-of-the-art, featuring a lifeboat bridge simulator and a wave tank.

The sea survival centre gives crews practical experience in survival techniques and sea safety. In the wave tank, they experience simulated real-life conditions including lightning and rain, darkness and thunder.

Without the support of the many people and businesses this training could not take place. One of the main sponsors of this sea survival training is the Lloyd’s register.
