A successful children’s craft afternoon was held at Rye Castle Museum, East Street, at the start of half term on Monday October 22. The theme was Egyptian, as the cast of the Rosetta Stone – on loan from the British Museum – was still on display. Just one more weekend remains of this special showing.
About 15 young people came along to the event, accompanied by friends and relatives. The afternoon also attracted more than 50 visitors.
Children made Egyptian-style jewellery, collars, amulets and headdresses, together with mummies and cats assisted by museum volunteers Sue, Amy, Yvonne and Jo. Rye and Winchelsea Rotary Club sponsored this event.
The last chance to view the replica of the Rosetta Stone is the weekend of October 27/28 at East Street Museum, open from 10:30am to 4:30pm.
East Street Museum closes for the winter period from November to March, apart from monthly talks. The next talk is on Thursday November 8 and will be the story of ‘The Mary Stanford’ by Laton Frewen, telling the tale of the 1928 Rye lifeboat disaster in which the entire 17-man crew lost their lives. There will also be a craft afternoon on Saturday December 8 as part of Rye Christmas Festival.
Volunteers at the museum will be treated to a ploughman’s lunch and also a Christmas party for members. If you would like to become a member of the museum or volunteer, contact info@ryemuseum.co.uk 01797 226728.
