Gorgeous Gusbourne grapes

So many new vineyards around us have become established in recent years, but Gusbourne over in Appledore prides itself in being that bit different. Gusbourne tells us their vision is simple “we strive to create the finest wines in the world.”

Inside the winery at Gusbourne

The approach to the estate is certainly promising. It looks fabulous.  There is an amazingly modern looking winery, beautiful vineyards, and a large comfortable covered outside space for tasting and admiring the stunning views – and the welcome is very warm and friendly.

In 2004, Andrew Weeber took over the estate with a clear vision and a single goal: to create English sparkling wines that would stand up alongside the very finest offerings from across the globe. The first vines were planted that year.

The debut vintages of Gusbourne Brut Reserve 2006 and Gusbourne Blanc de Blancs 2006 were released to critical acclaim in 2010. Gusbourne quickly earned a reputation as a producer of outstanding quality wines, with accolades from some of the industry’s most exacting critics.

We had a gorgeous time enjoying one of the Discovery Tours. This included a fantastically interesting hosted tour of the vineyards and winery, followed by a tutored tasting. The tour includes a three course lunch of seasonal food that is cleverly matched to the flavour of the wines. Our host was Sue, who was a pleasure to meet and informative and fun at the same time.

As well as being a wonderful way to pass a rainy autumn afternoon, we learned details about winemaking and were most impressed by the standards of excellence at Gusbourne.  The experience as a whole was uplifting and encouraging in these gloomy times.

You can find out all about the wines, and (once government restrictions permit) book tours here.
