Lunchtime for senior citizens

Every last Monday in the month, lunch is provided in the Community Centre on Conduit Hill under the auspices of the Royal Voluntary Service. It used to be known as the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service but its band of volunteers now include men.

A two course meal plus soft drink and coffee costs all of £5. At the time of writing, March 27, there was a choice of chicken or fish pie with vegetables followed by apple crumble and custard, all cooked fresh on the premises. Special dietary requirements can also be met.

Rae Festing has been the driving force for the last 18 years, having taken over from Jean Ball after she died. For the last two years now Chris Emson has been taking on the role of chef and organiser, though Rae still continues to do the administration work. Also in the team are eight other volunteers, seven of whom are seen in the main photo with Rae and Chris.

To share in this excellent food and good company, the only criterion is to be a senior citizen, Chris told me. “Anyone else that would like to come will be very welcome and we lay on a free lunch every Christmas. We’ve been very lucky to have the Masons supporting us”, she said.

For further information, phone Rae Festing on 01797 223952.

Editor’s note: The Rye branch of the Free Masons, the Wellington Lodge, each year raises considerable sums for local charities. Members meet at the Masonic Hall, Turkeycock Lane, Rye, TN31 7LE
