At the end of September, members of Rye Methodist Church bade goodbye to their old building, but since then the church fellowship has continued their Sunday services in a new venue, St Mary’s Centre.
Beginning on a high note with a harvest festival on October 3, the 10:30am services have continued as before, proving that the church is really the people rather than the building. Their minister, the Revd. Philip Wagstaff, is responsible with another colleague for eleven churches in the Hastings, Bexhill and Rye circuit so they rely on a number of local preachers and retired ministers to lead services and on occasions Canon David Frost, recently rector of St Mary’s, takes a communion service.
Church stewards Paul and Marilyn Martin and their members continue to take an active part in Churches Together in Rye (CTR) and on January 23, 2022, Rye Methodist Church will host the next united service of CTR. It is a given fact that no-one can sing hymns like the Methodists, even when wearing face masks, and now Sunday morning cinema-goers are able to enjoy their efforts.
