Although invisible to many, a huge variety of terrifying creatures have made their home in Rye. Over the last weekend, I encountered wild rattatas, flocks of pidgies and spearows and most unnerving of all, the monstrous zubat.
There are ways of defending yourself against these alarming creatures. You need to stock up on ammunition which can be done at a local landmark. In Rye, some of these include the water tower, the blue plaque commemorating Paul Nash and St Mary’s all at the top of the citadel. Other places provided additional and appropriate help; the Queens Head kindly gave me a potion and the Baptist chapel on Military Road offered me a new life.
The animals are characters in Pokemon Go, a mobile game that is encouraging people to get off their sofas and take to the streets, in the attempt to capture all the monsters. Players are characters on a map, which uses local topography and photographs to entice them into the real world. When a monster appears, the smartphone’s camera presents it to you for capture. Some Pokemon have felt that humans are getting too much of their own way and have launched a fight back.
