Northiam Midsummer Festival

What an amazing weekend! If you couldn’t make it to Glastonbury, then Northiam was surely the next best thing! Slightly over the top, but we really did have a great time at Northiam Bonfire Society’s Midsummer Festival when we saw a record turnout, and lots to do for everyone.

Very many thanks to Jempson’s, the main sponsor for the popular dog show, and thanks to Rupert Farrant, of Broad Oak Boarding Kennels, who managed the difficult task of judging all the precious furry friends and managing to keep everyone happy! Huge thanks to Sarah G & the Other 3 who kept the carnival atmosphere rolling with some crowd pleasing music, and to Rush, Witt & Wilson for sponsoring the band.

It was only the second time that we have had classic vehicles, and we were delighted to have such an amazing variety. Some of the owners dressed to match the era of their car, or to suit their military vehicle. Wonderful stuff!

Local societies all supported the festival, and took the opportunity to sign up new members – we have been delighted to have had so many new people move in to the village over the last two years, and we are pleased that they are joining in.

We had some excellent local food, with ice cream and sausages from Gate Court Farm, burgers from Bodiam Butchers and cakes made by the bonfire team. Beers came from Rother Valley, Three Leg, The Gun and Lakedown breweries – and there would be a riot if we didn’t feature Hunt’s Ciders – from Sedlescombe!

Apart from the huge dog show, we had demonstrations from Beach Buddies, the gorgeous working Newfoundlands, and then a spot of terrier racing to rack up the excitement.
Other local businesses have very kindly sponsored events or the society, and we are so grateful for all the assistance given to ensure we are able to bring the village together every now and then just to have some fun.

Not content with one event, on Sunday, the Village Hall Trust held a giant boot fair, which was similarly well attended, and the gardens of Westwell opened under the National Garden Scheme.

And the fun doesn’t stop there – next weekend (Friday, July 1 to Sunday, July 3) is another chance to enjoy the pub on your doorstep, when The Yard of Ale opens again. Friday from 4pm-9pm, Saturday from 12pm-9pm and Sunday from 12pm-6pm. Fingers crossed for warm days and good company.
