Rye Harbour Village fête took place on Sunday, August 13 on the field next to the caravan park. This is a traditional event held each year and looked forward to eagerly by the local community. There were lots of stalls to amuse the visitors including the rat race, coconut shy and beat the goalie, all run by locals who live in the village.
Both the RNLI and the Sussex Wildlife Trust, who have a big presence in the community, had a stall. Rye Harbour Herrings, the local shanty group, entertained the crowds with shanties and sea songs, including some unique to this area and the village itself.
Bernie Power, who organised the event with a team of helpers, said, “Despite a wet and cool start, the sun began to come out and the fête ended up being a great success. I would like to thank everyone who attended, all the stall holders and everyone who helped with the preparation and organisation of the fete. I would also like to extend a massive ‘thank you’ to the staff at Rye Harbour Park Holidays who helped out in so many ways, especially the general manager, Daniel, who offered to be put in the stocks and have cold wet sponges thrown at him. He ended up with a bucket of ice water being thrown over him to help raise money for the Rye Harbour Village Hall and raised £14, that’s lots of sponges! Daniel you were amazing and such a great sport. See you all next year!”
