The hand-propelled salt-spreader at the Town Hall

The town woke up on Tuesday morning to the sight of gently falling snowflakes turning the world white. Roofs and streets glistened in the winter sunlight, except where overnight salting had been spread on the roads. Pavements around the Town Hall were clear of snow too, where Richard Farhall, the Town Clerk, had been out early with the green salt barrow. In the High Street, parents and children were out with their plastic sledges, heading to the top of Leasam Hill, where the best snow-slides are. Our daughter phoned to ask if we had everything we needed to save a hazardous expedition. One passer-by succinctly summed it all up: “It’s beautiful, up to a point!”
