Despite dire warnings of inclement weather for Tuesday afternoon (rain to you and us!), the sun shone and much fun was had by children from Rye Primary School. Under the supervision of their science teacher, Sandra Sarkies, they planted out their carefully nurtured pumpkin plants – 7 in all – on the prepared Hugelkultur beds at the Community Garden at the end of Love Lane.
Once in, the plants were watered and then a netting defence against the ever-present (and hungry) rabbits was put in place.
The enthusiastic children then set about planting out 70 sunflower plants. These too were carefully watered and a plastic sleeve and holding stake added to ward off those pesky rabbits. When all was done and dusted, the children had created their very own sunflower field.
With the Garden now open at all times, the children will be able to come with their families to see their plants grow over the school holidays and, of course, harvest their pumpkins in time for Hallowe’en!
