I think it is sometimes forgotten that beyond the citadel and the outer reaches of Rye town there is a lot of countryside, with a most active agricultural scene and all around Rye the fields are full of lovely things to eat. It is easy to think that we can buy strawberries out of season and avocadoes that are flown in from miles away. It’s too easy to be attracted by French or German cheeses when in fact we have some great cheeses right here in East Sussex and Kent. Animals are also reared locally and produce tender cuts of meat without the horrors of travelling for miles to an abattoir and then on to the supermarkets.
Last weekend I found the Old Tractor Shed farm shop which has only just opened and will I think become very popular. A lot of thought has gone into the variety of goodies for sale, including family made pies and sausage rolls – and lots of chutneys and barbecue sauces, homemade ice creams and sorbets.
The Old Tractor Shed farm shop is just along the A259 in the direction of Brenzett, from Rye, and it’s at the roundabout for Brookland village. The smaller turn off that is Rectory Lane. We left with some vegetables and some local cheese and will head back soon!

Well worth a visit. A nice selection of local produce, meats, and cheeses—even local flour! This is going to be a regular stop.
