In Rye, on or close to St George’s Day, April 23, our national day, there has been a long tradition of former service and youth organisations parading and coming together at a civic event attended by mayor, council and the congregation of St Mary’s. There are photos of these parades going back generations.

Since 2019, civic events have been curtailed by Covid, but this year, on April 24, in bright sunshine, the standards, flags and escorts were paraded from Adams to the town hall, past the mayor and on to St Mary’s. The occasion provided the local scouts and guides an opportunity to be visible in the community.

The Reverend Paul White, rector of St Mary’s, officiating at his first civic event in Rye, explained the legend of St George and his relevance to the nation and the scout and guide movements.

As president of Rye Rye British Legion, I conducted the renewal of promises, reminding all scouts and guides of their law, motto and promise. Those present were able to reflect on the purpose and value of scouting and guiding. I made special mention of the volunteer leaders who give endless time and commitment to the movement.

This was the last civic event to be attended by outgoing mayor, Councillor Rebekah Gilbert, whose attendance at such events has been limited by Covid.

During the service there was an opportunity for the RNLI, from Rye Harbour, to parade their new standard and before it was laid with that of the Rye RBL on the high altar have it blessed by the rector.

Most present felt that it was good to return to a time when traditional civic events could take place.
