Some facts about sunflowers that you might not know:
- Each sunflower is actually thousands of teeny flowers.
- You should harvest sunflowers in the morning, not the afternoon.
- Each sunflower can contain from 1,000 to 2,000 seeds.
- The French word for sunflower is “tournesol”, which means “turns with the sun.”
The manager of the Sunflower charity shop on Cinque Ports Street in the heart of the town is Clair Debley-Turner and she is walking sunshine. If you visit the shop you always get a really warm welcome and it seems that she knows everyone in Rye. She is known for her kindness and caring and is always there with a cheering word especially on a wet and windy day. This ethos is also found in her volunteers who go out of their way to help their customers. The window changes regularly and is always eye-catching.
Clair and her team are looking for volunteers to help out in the shop. In return, the Sunflower charity can offer flexible hours, retail experience, a chance to meet new people and an opportunity to support the charity’s work.
If you have time to help, please get in touch with the volunteer development officer: amy.harris@rmch.org.uk or telephone 01797 363888.
