For more than 50 years Landgate House was a successful antiques business run by the late John Bragge, a well known local character who was passionate about the town and especially “his” beloved Landgate arch which framed his iconic building.
The building has remained within the family, now occupied by local businessman Simon Spencer who, after a two-year journey through the planning maze has finally realised his dream and opened a new watering hole, namely The Outside Inn.
The Grade 2 listed building has undergone a sympathetic restoration, the character has been retained coupled with a modern twist internally, now a comfortable and very pleasant place to go and unwind.
Simon has worked tirelessly to achieve his goal, never giving up despite many hoops he had to jump through along the way.
I can’t help thinking the late John Bragge would have been proud of what the building has become, particularly as his family name is retained above the door as Bragge’s Landgate Corner.
It would be difficult to miss The Outside Inn, it occupies a bold corner position at the top of Landgate, if you do pass it, turn right at the next junction into Bedford Place where you will find a car park, stroll back up the Landgate and join Simon and his team for a well earned drink.
As part of his ongoing renovation and refurbishment project, we understand part of the building will soon be offering coffees and ice creams. What’s stopping you? Pop in and see what’s behind the front door, if only for a nose!
